How The Savannah Cat & Bee Were Made.

This was a great commission for Sam. Sam is a Savannah Cat Breeder and also a Bee Keeper and he wanted a sculpture that would showcase both passions. Initially, he wanted a Savannah cat sat with a bee on her nose. However, during the design process, I decided it would be much better if you could see all of the cat’s face. I then created a relationship between the cat and the bee, through adjusting the pose; the bee is just touching the cat’s paw, as they gaze at each other.

The Savannah Cat was carved from Ash. I love using aged Ash logs, as the wood grain always looks fantastic - it worked perfectly for this piece. Once the Cat was carved, pyrography was used for the amazing markings which really brought the cat to life. Osmo Oil 420 was used to preserve the timber.

The Bee was a fun but challenging sculpture. The body was carved from Oak. The legs were made out of steel nails, which I cut, welded and shaped. The wings were made from epoxy resin and wire, and the pollen sacks were made from painted filler. It was carefully attached to the paw with a wood screw. The small attachment gives it the illusion of the bee flying and just touching the cat’s paw.

The Cat was fixed to the ground with 2 thick steel rods running through a beautiful sandstone slab, then into a concrete base underneath for security.

There is also a tracking device inside the sculpture, for Sam’s piece of mind, due to the prominent installation location on the edge of his driveway.

Sam was overjoyed with his sculpture and it has brought much delight to the locals and children on there walk to and from school.
